We live in a time where generational knowledge about money is being lost in translation. With the advent of the technological age, a disassociation with money has transpired. Today, Digital Natives are desensitized to the real cost of purchases because they rarely, if ever, see real money used within a transaction. When no money or perceived value is exchanged for a good or service, transactions become invisible, with no obvious cost or consequences at the forefront. For example, our research shows youth today view credit and debit cards as the same. Have you ever tried passing on a sound-bite of financial wisdom to a digital native in your life? Give it a try. Ask them what the consequences are of having a credit card before knowing how to use it wisely. Or, ask what the opportunity cost is on a 0-down, pre-approved car loan. Ask them if most freemium games are really free. Odds are they’ll give you an eye-roll—assuming because they know more about navigating the digital world, they have the world of invisible money covered. While they may be able to run circles around their parents in the digital world, they don’t know what they don’t know about dealing with cold, hard cash.

Our back-story began in 2006, with the research and development of investor education programming. At that time, we identified gaps for young people in awareness and understanding of not only investor issues, but also a startling lack of basic financial and consumer-related knowledge. We then brought together an Advisory Council of professionals, to build effective, unbiased programs and we’ve been building ever since. The engine of our social enterprise is comprised of industry experts in fields including education, communications design, financial services, and consumer and investor education specialists. Developed by an award-winning team, our programs draw on the latest education techniques—fueled by our vast experience and ongoing research from working with thousands of kids, teens, young adults, parents and educators.
We believe that financial illiteracy is part of the DNA of nearly every major social issue we face. We also know that small change can generate huge results—it’s how compound interest works. We turn marketing tactics upside-down and inside-out to spark behavioral change. We use evidence-based programs and tools that break down barriers to understanding how the money world works. We help families grasp today’s financial and consumer marketplace and help them discover choices about their money and their lives.
